Since 2021, Architecture + Advocacy has gathered a cohort of youth artists in South LA to shape narratives around sustainability, food access, and mental wellness on their own terms. During the 5 week workshop, youth artists learn the fundamentals of architecture— from floor plans, to sustainable city design— as a tool for telling the stories of their community. The entire 5-week curriculum is created by USC Architecture students, who serve as instructors, mentors and advisors throughout the program.

The youth artists quickly make connections between the architecture of their neighborhoods and how it affects their mental and physical health. As part of the culminating project to design a community center, they have envisioned:

  • Public parks in previously vacant lots

  • Meditation gardens

  • Art museums for Chicano artists, and more

  • Imagine the possibilities if every community had the agency to build the resources they need in their neighborhoods. Following our 5-weeks with the youth, they work with professional artists to select one idea and design and create an art installation, mural, or campaign to share the stories from the workshop with the broader community.

While our curriculum changes year to year, each workshop generally contains the following components:

    • “What is Architecture?” lesson and conversation

    • Introduction to architectural drawing: Plans, sections, elevations, and model-making activities

    • Discussion of specific topics such as spatial injustice, sustainable design materials, and walkable cities

    • A “Community Day” where youth artists interview local residents and collect community stories

    • Design review of the proposed community centers by professional architects, construction managers, and community leaders
